I have been working on some postcard designs to be sent to donors as Birthday cards. I was working with a sketch & watercolour look, wasn't happy with it. Felt overworked. So then I simplified it (these were my initial idea, but I thought they might be a little too... snarky). My sense of humour is a little twisted, and I thought they were funny, but we'll see if they get approved or not... "Your birthday cake was great! We saved you a candle."

I did this portrait for a family in our church. They had one done by "Grammie" from our church of their daughter, and asked me to do one of their son in sort of the same style. It was just a quick, pencil sketch, so I agreed. The kid ended up looking a little older, but considering I haven't done this sort of thing in a long while, I think it turned out pretty good.

So since this was just a quick thing for the school, I sketched over his photo and did a monotone watercolour texture, which my boss then wanted colourized. So. Layers! Anyhow, here it is.

Pariah the Infernal Pact Warlock

I've been building this Infernal Pact Tiefling Warlock (from D&D), mostly because I think a non-evil Hell'lock would create some interesting character dillemas. I picked the name Pariah before I had even picked a class, and since Tieflings often have names based off words like that, it seemed a natural choice. Then the choice of why she's a pariah. And, come on. Making a pact with a demon? Pariah.

So! I started building her and kept finding cool items (I was just making her a lvl 8 as that is the lvl my current D&D chara is) that were chosen for mechanics but made nice images in my head. Mainly, the goggles, the demonskin tattoo, and a sickle.

The main thing about this character is her sweetness. She is a little naive and kind and gentle, yet she made a deal with a demon, and some of her attacks have friendly fire. I love that contract. Very... Merrill-esque from Dragon Age 2.

Plus, I really want to roleplay in a light Russian accent.

I did this quick little sketch of her this evening. Really quick, not at all defined/refined. Her horns are different sizes, but now I think I like it like that ^.^ Threw in some fast shading to contrast a bit.

The women's ministry think tank I am on at my church meets Saturday mornings. We are starting up the women's ministry at our church, and currently planning our kick-off event. So Saturday morning, we decided we should have tickets for the event. I am the artist in the group, so it is understood I would accomplish this. But they wanted it done for Sunday. Mind you, I agreed to it, so it wasn't foisted upon me or anything.

So! I did this in an afternoon (and printed them that night).

And, as we wanted a teaser for the next event, I wanted to put the date on the back of the card. But I didn't know that date, so... just kinda did whatever haha.

Inspired by the fun I had with last night's church artwork, I decided to do something like that again.

Anyhow. I have art again this Sunday. The president of Simpson University, my current place of employment, is speaking at my church, so we all thought it would be easiest if I did the art for him. He will be speaking on some verses in Psalms and Proverbs (which I can't recall right now) regarding escaping to the rooftop, though instead of marital strife, he will be using it to discuss quiet time with God.

I stole from Steve Leeper's (who was one of my college profs) moon style a bit here. A lot a bit... Let's just say "inspired by," yeah?

Church artwork! Message will be on how Christians are tending to lose sight of eternity. Focusing, rather, entirely on the good things Christ taught and forgetting about his whole purpose for coming, being blind to him.

I struggled a lot with the concept for this, since the message idea was so abstract (as most sermon messages are), but then it just kinda hit me and I was pretty pleased with the idea of it. I thought my Jesus was super cute, too. Haha.

Three Shastas ESL shirt design

I kinda stumbled into a pro-bono t-shirt design for the ESL (English as a Second Language) camp my church helps out with each year. The theme this year is "Three Shastas," which refers to the Redding area's Mt. Shasta, Shasta Dam and Shasta Lake.

The client wanted a shot of all three (which I think there are some photos out there which capture all three at once), in kind of a brush stroke drawing. I didn't think that'd make a very impacting shirt, not graphic enough for kids. So I did these simple logo type designs. I like the black bg one best, but also did a white iteration just in case it would be too expensive to print. And, just to tie in the original request, I did a version with brush strokes. I thought the line quality was fun on these, but the image perhaps not dynamic.

These actually make me think of a wine label or something... haha.

I'm on my church's think tank committee for a women's ministry which we are starting up. We're planning the first, kick off event, and this morning I was asked to create a "save the date" slide for it for tomorrow morning. Just to start to spread the word. Our ministry statement is:

"We are Sisters...
Seeking Him Continually
Serving Him Faithfully
Sharing Him Boldly"

I figured that, since I will eventually do branding, I might as well come up with something quick right now, to kind of test the waters, so I incorporated the key words, "Seeking, Serving, Sharing" with simple icons. And to give the whole thing a softness, I put a canvas texture over the top.

This is an illustration I did for a college information day flyer. They wanted something that would appeal to jr/sr highschoolers, so I randomly really just wanted to do a Lichtenstein style image, which, of course, is just ripped off from old comics. My rip off isn't as close as his rip offs though, so I don't feel bad. Haha.

It was fun learning how to do the dot effect.

Anyhow, this was for a postcard at work advertising summer school classes (Chemistry, Algebra, Stats and Psychology). They wanted some fun and quirky, along the lines of a mad scientist. Needless to say, I had a blast with this one.

Linework in Photoshop, Painting in Painter, with lots of textures added in with Photoshop. I think my favourite texture was the close up skin texture I used on her face. It added a lot of life to an otherwise bland painting ^_^

At work I've been trying to get an engraved look to a photo in Photoshop. I'm replicating a dollar bill for a "Theology of Money" course. So first I just did a lame, stand in image with... Oh, some effect in Photoshop.

Then I tried to do it by hand, but it looked too sketchy.

Then I found a great tutorial online, and gave that a go, but my lines were too big and far apart.

After a little practice, I got one I really liked.

I am super excited to try this out with my own personal drawings.

My Dragon Age character

I'm obsessed with Dragon Age. I just finished Origins and have begun Awakening. Best video game I've ever played. I fell in love with Alistair big time. Now, if you don't know much about DA, it is an RPG much like a "choose your own adventure" book. Choices you make affect everything from your relationship with your party members, to the plot itself.

So this is my rendition of my character after Origins. I am going to explain a bit about her below, if you are curious.

Art Deco inspired poster

I recently got hired on as Creative Design Assistant at Simpson University. One of the projects I have been assigned last week was to create a poster for the music dept. for an upcoming show. I hadn't been given any creative direction yet, so I just started playing around with the idea of jazz, the 20s (which was a theme this year for the university for one of the projects), and art deco. I started putting this together. Fortunately, before I got too far, I was informed that it was a little too elegant, and the show was more energetic. So, putting it in my pocket for a later project.

Anyhow, thought I'd share what I had so far.

The chain on the lady's hips mimics some common art deco designs.

Oh, and here was a quick layout/colour mockup I'd done.

Some sketches from a story I've been pondering recently. You may or may not recall the pirate lady I had been drawing, Capt. Rosemary Angel? Well, I've been working on her a bit more. Did a sketch below, and then another character appeared.
More on him later.

She has an... interesting relationship with this gentleman, Redding Finch. He's a barkeep.

And here's the one I hadn't expect, Hezekiah Judge. Angel calls him, "the General." Before she meets him, he is always wearing the goggles, hat, mask, etc. The mask has a voice disguiser in it, making him sound much older. He's something of an engineer/mechanic, though not very efficient at what he does. Innovative at times, but not great. Took me a bit of sketching, but I finally got him not looking like a girl. Much. Heh.

Slavery- OGBF Feb 6, 2011

Not sure I'm completely happy with this one. It is the intro piece for a series on slavery, focusing on slavery during the Civil War era and leading up to slavery of sin. The gentleman speaking wanted to incorperate the concept of slavery, chains, and slave ships, the latter of which I was unable to bring into the image. I used watercolours to attempt to get that oceany/water kind of connection. But in the end I was kinda rushed.

By the way, I have ten minutes to wish you all a happy new year! A happy Chinese new year. ^_~

Kindle Book Cover

I got a freelance position to design a cover for a Kindle book. Here is the first mock up I did for the cover, as well as some quick character sketches to get a feel for the main characters.

Aaaand here's the second mock up with the revisions the client wanted (including more of a Bogarty feel to the guy). Moving the girl over to the left made the left too heavy, so I'll compensate by moving that folder around.

I am working on a poster for a gentleman who wants a welcome sign for his "choir" (aka group of friends who eat good food and drink wine together) in the form of a B-Movie. He also makes usufructuary wine (wine made from fruit hanging in public way, therefore available to be picked). So he wanted that incorporated. Anyhow, here's some of the characters in the poster. They have kind of a weird colouring, which unsettles me a bit but in a... B-Movie ish way?

In a constant effort to pretend Sarah Mensinga and I are best friends and love all the same things, I've tried digital painting again. And now that I'm not expecting it to replicate traditional methods, I like it a lot more. I'm just starting with a value study on these two, and will overlay colour later.

I was rereading my Nano novel from last year, based on the Grimm's fairy tale, "A Princess in Disguise," and decided to draw the main character, Charlesetta (aka Roughskin) again. Since my style has changed a bit since the last time I drew her. I think I like this result much better.

Working on some t-shirt design ideas for a friend who is adopting and wants to sell t-shirts to help raise money. She wanted to incorporate the idea of an adopted child's family tree (they are doing an open adoption), and mentioned the concept of a braided tree.

So here's the first concept I did, and how I unrealistically would have loved it to be printed on a shirt (haha, waaaaay too expensive, I'm sure).

And here was another quick concept sketch, embracing more the braided tree idea.

Advent and Raven Lady

Here's the church artwork I did for this Sunday. The message will be regarding the first week of advent, with a theme of love, and how God imparts the nature of his love into us.

I emailed the image to the gentleman speaking and explained my inspiration for it this way: "You mentioned God's nature being love, and I thought of how he has planted that in all of us, we just have to help nurture it. So I drew a little acorn (like Oak Grove acorn ^_~), which also kind of resembles a heart, and under the direction of Christ's own love (the position the hands are in are the traditional ICXC hand symbol from iconography, which means "Jesus Christ) our love can sprout and mature"

As it was Halloween, and as I didn't get to do anything for it, I had to at least draw something Halloween-ish. So! I started doodling some images from Dracula, my favourite novel.

So! Here we go.

This was the first one I did. I just drew the girl then thought, hmm, she kinda reminds me of Lucy. So then I added Dracula in.

This was kind of the undead, vampire version of Lucy.

This is one of my favourite scenes. Dracula causes Jonathan to be... well, paralyzed on the bed while he draws Mina to himself. He rips his chest and forces her to drink his blood. The scene has a very creepy, sensual, horrible feel to it.

Travelogue- character sketches

Here are some character explorations of my characters in the mini comic I'm doing.

The comic is called, "The Fetchers in: Mr. O's Impressive Client"

It is about a small company (C.O. Inc) that, basically, does whatever needs doing, for a price, specializing in the paranormal. From dehauntings to finding lost dopplegangers. They are known to others as "The Fetchers." Mostly because they are all based off of my dogs, and I thought that was funny.

So here are some explorations:

This would be Mr. O and Miss Grey; just quick little roughs.

Another quick sketch of those two.

Here are a few explorations of Lady C. The profile is going more... realistic than I intend to. On the right are the stances of the trio of characters. The creature with four eyes has nothing to do with this whatsoever.

Here are some more finalized character studies of the group. Mr. O, Lady C, and Miss Grey.

C and O founded the group, and, after saving Grey and realizing no one wanted her back, they got stuck with her as well.

C is the leader, takes the cases, deals with clients, that sort of thing. She is clever, a little stuck up, and very impatient.

Mr. O is a meek fellow, very shy and sweet. He doesn't have much confidence, and is usually a bit of a scaredy cat. He is extremely devoted to C, and if she is threatened, he becomes a force to be reckoned with. Secretly in love with Miss Grey.

Grey is... young. She loves everyone, but has a limited attention span. She is clumsy and all over the place, but seems to have a knack for dealing with the supernatural. Totally oblivious to Mr. O's affections for her.

These are some explorations of Lacryma Jhona, the overseeing spirit of the Land of Eternal Rain, and their newest client.

A birthday card I did for a friend. Sadly, the watercolour is very subtle, and the scanner can't pick most of it up. And the stuff it does pick up is horrible scanned as far as colour and texture. Oh well. The grass is green, not yellow. And the sky is blue, not patchy ^_^

A few missionaries are going to be talking about the ESL (English as a Second Language) camp in Korea, and also the Korean kids who came here for an ESL camp. So I drew this, and added the little acorns sprouting (also the one on her shirt) to represent the seed being planted.

Just a quick sketch.

Doing some more character exploration for my mini comic. I'm trying more simple, cartoony people and more realistic/stylized people, and things in between. I think this is more realistic than I want to go, but it was interesting to try. These are two of my main characters, Mr. O and Miss Grey. The story is called, "Mr. O's Impressive Client." The other character not shown is Lady C. All the characters are actually named after nicknames we gave our dogs, and in turn their personalities. Mr. O is Oso, Lady C is our recently departed SiSi, and Miss Grey is Gracie Mae.

Not too happy with the finished project- it was a little rushed. Church artwork for this Sunday. I had to fill in last minute for someone. The message will be on (I think) our independence through our dependence on God. So I thought of a blind girl with a seeing eye dog. ^_^

Midwest Poetry Tour poster

An amazing poet friend of mine is starting up her Midwest Poetry Tour and asked a bunch of people to help make posters for the different venues. Mine was for her upcoming appearance at The Firefly Coffee House in Fort Wayne, IN. If you live near there, you must go, because her poems will make you laugh like an inside joke.

This was the poster I designed.

Figure Drawing drawings

While preparing my website, I took a bunch of pictures of my figure drawing stuff from Freshman year. So I thought I would do a drawing dump of figure drawing. This class was a great experience- I learned so much about how to draw a figure- to really think about contours of the shadows. Drawing what you see, not what you know. Taught me a lot about form just by observing.

We only ever had one model for the whole class. She was a really wonderful model, too.

I got in late on this session, so I had to make it rather quickly. I also had an angle no one else had wanted. I was really happy with how it turned out.

Pretty sure this picture is possessed. It always falls off its mat.

I finished with this one earlier than the others, so Andy had me go ahead and start laying in a shadow and the background. He also kept it over the summer to display in the MCA.

The day we did this one, I forgot we were supposed to have toned paper, so had to go to the bookstore to buy some. So already had a late start. Then I hated hated what I was doing, so Andy suggested I start over on the other side. I did, and was still having lots of troubles. He said he understood I was getting frustrated, and since we were running out of time to just go ahead and do what I could. Glad he encouraged me to keep going, because I think it turned out pretty decent. I'm a big fan of adding that red conte crayon in.

This one was manually toned paper- you cover the paper with vine charcoal, then start to erase away the form, darkening where you need to. Really fun.

This was I think our midterm. We just had this female bust we had to do in charcoal. I was really hating her, and then just decided, "You know what? I want to do a weird angle." So I did her from kinda a rear 3/4. I like that for a second it is a little ambiguous. I also did this sitting on the ground. Apparently Andy didn't approve of artists sitting on the ground, or so I heard later, but he never mentioned it to me when he saw me working on it outside of class.

Now these were what I LOVED doing. Gesture drawings. I haven't taken pictures of any of our thirty second or less gesture drawings, but I liked those, too. I think this was probably a five minute one.

Artwork for my church in Redding. The message will be on the importance of the family and its role in passing down the Gospel. The imagery the speaker will use is like a relay race, passing the baton. But I hate making it too easy for my congregation. ^_^

So since I just got my new comp, and my new CS5, I was really jazzed to try the width tool in Illustrator. I love love love it. So this is the vector linework I did of my pirate, with just some quick tonal painting in Photoshop. You need to try Illustrator.

Ah. A good long name. I was asked to put together a wallpaper with the logo of the Crochet Liberation Front for someone building a computer for his wife. So I put this together. He wanted a hardcore militant look to it, because he thinks the organization sounds like some kind of terrorist organization. I think the ball of yarn looks like intestines.

Supervillian card- Nacho Barf

In my illustration class, we were assigned to create super hero cards based on our class nicknames. Fortunately, my nickname is Nacho Barf... Ha. So here is my supervillianess! This is just the basic artwork of the front, without much in the way of graphic design elements (logos, titles, etc).

Her superpower? An iron stomach and a slow digestion. Food just stews in her stomach, building intensive pressure. She had bionic tubes implanted into her stomach so she could drain the contents into little bottles to use as explosives.

And as per my prof's request, a sidekick. Her name is ChuChu Baby.
